A Tale of Co-operation: July Round-Ups

June 29, 2023

We are thrilled to announce the Superior Hiking Trail Association has been selected to be the July recipients of two round-up donation programs: Whole Foods Co-op GIVE! Non-profit Support Program in Duluth, and and Cook County Whole Foods Co-op Round-up Program in Grand Marais.

Talk about Co-operation and working together! To have these two generous organizations supporting us during the same month at opposite ends of the North Shore is an incredible act of stewardship of the Trail. Both Co-ops are current Business Members of the Association as well, and have long histories of supporting the SHTA.

Each year, Whole Foods Co-op owners vote for 10 non-profits that align with the Co-op’s larger objectives of supporting a healthy and vibrant community. Cook County Co-op also selects a Round-Up recipient each month that reflects their mission to support organizations in Cook County that are centered food access and equity, kids, community wellbeing, and sustainable agriculture. Each program is designed to makes it simple for shoppers to support positive change in our community by rounding up their purchase at the register.

“When I round up my purchase, it’s only a few cents for me but it makes a massive impact on the Trail,” said SHTA Board Member Mike Ward. “The last time the SHTA was selected for the Co-op’s GIVE! Round-Up Program, they raised over $11,000.”

Trail Snacks that Give Back

We’re very excited about this opportunity, and as regular SHT trail users and Co-op shoppers, we wanted to share the tip that both Co-ops have some great trail food for everyone from day hikers to trail runners to thru-hikers.

In this video, SHTA Board Member and SHT trail runner Mike Ward joined Whole Foods Co-op Hillside Store Manager Jen Krussow to share his favorite trail foods at the Co-op. Many of the foods highlighted in this video can also be found at Cook County Co-op.

Both Mike and Jen love to hike and run on the Superior Hiking Trail frequently. Mike previously held the Fastest-Known-Time record for completing the SHT’s entire 300-mile in 8 days, 7 hours, and 59 minutes. He definitely knows how to fuel up and feel good to “roll big miles” on the SHT!

If you’re planning a hike, backpack, or run on the Trail during July, swing by one of the Co-ops on your way to the Trail to grab some delicious and nutritious trail snacks while also supporting the Superior Hiking Trail. It’s a win-win!
