Thank you, trail-clearing volunteers!
If you’ve hiked on the Superior Hiking Trail, you’ve benefited from the work of our volunteers. Each and every spring they come to the Trail to lop, nip, and saw so that you can enjoy the SHT unencumbered. One of our volunteers summed it up like this: “I feel like we are only borrowing that stretch of dirt and rock and mud and roots, and the woods would be delighted to reclaim it and tries all the time.”
This May we had 50 volunteers join us for two trail-clearing weekends, during which time they cleared 100 miles of Trail! More importantly, everyone was safe and had a good time. Thank you to every person who joined us; you made a huge difference.
The backbone of volunteerism remains our adopters. Section adopters stepped up to help us get the Trail cleared. Many of our section adopters are chainsaw-certified and helped us out — and the section adopters who aren’t chainsaw-certified still helped by knocking back brush and ensuring that trail runners and hikers won’t get snagged as they pass through. Special shout-out to the volunteer crew in Grand Marais — they have gone above and beyond.
Without the work of volunteers, the woods would win and the Trail would soon be impassible. Thank you, volunteers, for your help in clearing the Trail.
