July’s Superior Hero Tale:
A chance encounter between SHTA board member Amy Brooks and a woman who’d lost her hiking stick in the Caribou River leads us to nominate the owner of that lost pole — Mary Stephens — as a Superior Hero.
In the flurry of excitement over the lost stick, which Amy rescued from the river, Mary mentioned that she and her husband Ben have included the Superior Hiking Trail Association in their will.
Mary calls Amy the hero for rescuing her pole, but we appreciate the foresight that Ben and Mary have shown in making an enduring contribution to the SHTA.
“Since 1984,” Mary says, “we have extensively explored the SHT. We have our favorite places and we hold the memories in our heart.” Ben suffered a stroke in 2016 and that has hampered their hiking. Nonetheless, she reports, “we have found several ways to get back into the woods, where we find so much peace and joy.”
We’re glad one heroic act — Amy’s pole rescue — led to learning about Mary and Ben’s heroic act of contributing to the future success of the SHT.
