Split Rock Ridge Loop
While hikers and runners wait for the new Split Rock River Bridge (read more about our campaign to replace the bridge HERE), there’s another fantastic loop available at Split Rock Wayside that doesn’t involve fording a river! This other Split Rock loop — called the Split Rock Ridge Loop — is a great alternative. You may find that you actually like it better than the Split Rock River Loop!
We’re hosting a guided hike here on June 23rd – check out our Event Calendar for more information!
Directions: To access this 4.4-mile loop, park at Split Rock Wayside. Hike through the Highway 61 underpass to the Gitchi-Gami Trail. Turn left and hike north on the Gitchi-Gami for 0.2 mile.
Turn left to cross Highway 61 and follow SHT spur for 0.4 mile up to the main SHT.
Turn right to head north on the SHT. Follow it for 1.0 mile and enjoy views of Lake Superior and Split Rock Lighthouse. Cross Split Rock Creek on a culvert bridge.
Turn right on an SHT spur trail to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. This trail leads downhill for 0.8 mile and crosses Highway 61.
Turn right at the paved Gitchi-Gami Trail and stay on this trail for 0.3 mile.
Turn left onto the Corundum Mine Trail and follow along the lake with several overlooks. Follow this for 1.6 miles along Crazy Bay until reaching the trail’s end at the Gitchi-Gami Trail.
Turn left onto the Gitchi-Gami Trail to reach the underpass under Highway 61 and return to the Split Rock Wayside.
If you’d like to make a gift to support our work to replace the Split Rock River Bridge, you can do so HERE.
