SHTA COVID-19 Update: June 1, 2020
June 1, 2020
A message from the SHTA team to all SHT users:
As Minnesota slowly turns the dial towards reopening outdoor recreation activities and amenities, the Superior Hiking Trail remains a desirable destination for a healing escape into the natural world. By following the guidance below, you can help make sure the Trail remains a safe, enjoyable experience for you and everyone else.
As of June 1, 2020, our recommendation to all SHT users is to continue to #RecreateResponsibly. A few ways to help keep our trail community healthy: please continue to practice social distancing on the SHT (especially on narrow sections), avoid hiking or camping in groups larger than 10 people, and stay home if you’re sick. We trust you to use your good judgment and continue to be good stewards of the Trail while you enjoy it.
SHTA recently joined the #RecreateResponsibly coalition, alongside our partners at the North Country Trail Association, REI, and many more, to help educate outdoor enthusiasts during the pandemic.
For those of you seeking an overnight experience on the Trail, we’re pleased to report all SHT backcountry campsites are now open. Before you go, be sure to check for the most up-to-date recommendations from the US Forest Service when camping inside the Superior National Forest and from Minnesota DNR when camping in state parks and forests. At all times, please limit group sizes on the Trail and at SHT campsites to 10 or fewer people.
Thanks to a drier-than-usual spring, our staff and contractors have made great progress evaluating, clearing, and preparing the Trail for the hiking season. All SHTA volunteer events have been cancelled through the end of June, and we have also decided to cancel the new “Fourth Friday” project series for new volunteers that we had planned to launch this month. Volunteers, rest assured — we will share new safety protocols for future SHTA events soon. If you’d like to get involved, all volunteer opportunities can be found in our Volunteer Portal.
As always, you can Contact Us with questions or concerns that relate to the SHT.
Thanks again for doing your part to keep our trail community safe and healthy!
