Duluth Area Trail Users: Shuffle Those Feet, Sniff Those Wildflowers
Those sections of the Superior Hiking Trail north and east of Duluth sometimes feel like weak stepsisters compared to their glorious siblings on the ridges high above Lake Superior. But there’s a reason to check out — with new eyes and pounding feet — the SHT between the Lismore Road and Normanna Road trail heads.
Where the SHT shares the North Shore State (snowmobile) Trail has been freshly mowed and feels much more inviting than its pre-mowed state. But what hasn’t been mowed also appeals: all along those NSST stretches you’ll see a proliferation of wildflowers, responding to the full sun, that you won’t see in the woods.
At some point on that section, you’ll come to a logged-over area.
Things look a bit rough there right now, but the trees will grow back, AND we built about a quarter mile of new trail off the logging road. Here’s where we need you to shuffle your feet to wear down the tread. Runners, get a boost in your workout by scuffing up the tread for us — you’ll feel glad you did it.
