SUMMARY:Founders' Night
DESCRIPTION:Over 30 years ago\, the concept for the Superior Hiking Trail was born out of a feasibility study put together by Leland Schaar of the U.S. Forest Service. The rugged\, challenging landscape of the Sawtooth Mountains and the presence of Lake Superior offered an opportunity to experience the most spectacular vistas in the Midwest. This foresight\, a dusting of destiny\, and critical investment by a state-sponsored conservation fund were the ingredients a loyal\, committed and talented group of Minnesotans needed to blaze and build what would become the state’s premier natural footpath along Lake Superior’s North Shore. \nWe want to honor and celebrate the folks who launched the SHT and who made significant contributions in its 32-year history with an evening of storytelling and connecting\, with tasty hors d’oeuvres from Duluth Grill and a cash bar to bring the stories to life. You’re invited to join us at SHTA’s Founders’ Night. \nWhat: Founder’s Night\nWhen: Thursday\, October 11th 6 – 9pm. Reception at 6pm\, Program at 7pm.\nWhere: Great Lakes Aquarium\, 353 Harbor Dr\, Duluth\, MN 55802\nTickets: $30 per person\, available online HERE \nSpace is limited so get your tickets today! We hope you’ll join us for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience SHT history with those who made it.

SUMMARY:Hoops Ale for a Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the City of Duluth\, the Superior Hiking Trail Association is building new trail to create a loop at Ely’s Peak\, soon to be the third in the “Triple Crown of SHT Loops” in Duluth. Hoops Brewing is excited to host SHTA for an evening to support the new loop project! \nShare the event on Facebook! \nJoin us on Wednesday\, August 1st from 6-9pm to raise a pint and learn more about the new section of Trail. Hoops Brewing will be crafting a special “Ely’s Peak Ale” to celebrate\, and there will be a raffle with great prizes to raise funds for the project. The event is open to the public and free to attend. \nSHTA staff will be in attendance to provide an update on the project and answer your trail questions. \nWork on this new section of trail is being funded through the City of Duluth’s St. Louis River Corridor Initiative and a match from SHTA. The St. Louis River Corridor Initiative invests in public park and trail improvements from Lincoln Park to the Fond du Lac neighborhood. These initiative projects have already benefited the SHT by helping to create the Brewer Park and Spirit Mountain loops in Duluth. Initiative projects are funded in part by $18 million in bonds\, collected through the ½ and ½ tourism tax approved by the Minnesota Legislature in 2014. These funds leverage additional dollars through community partnerships and grants. Raffle proceeds from this event will go towards the SHTA’s funding match.

SUMMARY:Guided Hike AND Voyageur Brewing Pint Night
DESCRIPTION:As part of Voyageur Brewing’s June “Get Outdoors Month”\, they are dedicating June 27th to the Superior Hiking Trail. This event will feature a Guided Hike\, a specialty beer for the Superior Hiking Trail Association\, and a presentation about the changes coming to the Cook County sections of the Trail. The proceeds from the specialty beer will go towards trail maintenance as well as $1 from every other pint sold the entire day. Grab a beer and join us for each of the events below! No registration is necessary for the guided hike or pint night – just join us for the fun day in Grand Marais!  \n2:00pm – “A Tale of Two Bridges and the Tales They Tell about Caring for the Superior Hiking Trail”\, 2.2 miles\nJoin Superior Hiking Trail Association executive director Denny Caneff on a hike during which he will spin “A Tale of Two Bridges.” Building two bridges? Sounds simple enough. But therein lies the tale: how do you move 4 tons of bridge beams by hand? How do you build a bridge — again\, by hand — over a 30-foot deep gorge? And learn how simply getting a hiking trail across a stream is a complex endeavor. This is an easy two-mile hike\, out and back. Meet at the SHT spur trail at the Kadunce River Wayside. Be sure to stick around for the event at Voyageur Brewing Company!\nDirections to Kadunce River Wayside: On Hwy. 61 milepost 119\, just past the Outpost Motel. \n5:00-9:00pm – SHTA staff will be at the brewery to answer questions and chat. They will have maps\, guide books\, and lists of Voyageur Brewing beer and hike pairings. \n6:00pm – Presentation and conversation in the back brewery about the trail maintenance coming to Cook County. \nShare the event with your friends on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/373057496525178/
