DESCRIPTION:Join SHTA and professional trail builder Tim Malzhan as we renew this worn and muddy section of trail. This project was started last year\, and now we’ll wrap it up. \nActivities will include hardening the trail surface\, building rock and wooden structures\, building drainage features\, and reshaping tread with hand tools. No experience necessary! All tools and training will be provided by SHTA. Expect a 0.3 mile hike from the trailhead to the project. \nIf you wish to attend this event for multiple days\, a separate registration is needed for each day that you wish to participate. (We are working on a fix for this\, we apologize for the inconvenience.) If multiple people wish to volunteer together\, each participant must complete a separate registration. Youth ages 12-17 are welcome if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nFree car camping nearby is available to participants. SUMMARY:Guided Hike: Beaver Bay to Fault Line Creek Camp
DESCRIPTION:Encounter amazing geology and spectacular views on this hike led by Master Naturalists. A talus slope cliff is a highlight\, along with the gravity-defying clifftop red pines. You’ll see beaver activity\, too. Occasional stops for questions and to learn more about what you’re seeing will keep you from exerting too much and quench your thirst for knowledge of the Trail and its environs. \nThis 8 mile round-trip hike is challenging to difficult with 1500 feed of elevation change with some steep\, challenging climbs. \nTrailhead Location: Lax Lake Rd Trailhead. Driving Directions: Take Hwy 61 to Beaver Bay (25 miles northeast of Two Harbors\, 3 miles south of Silver Bay). Turn north (away from the lake) onto Lax Lake Rd. SUMMARY:Indian Camp Creek Stone Step Crossing
DESCRIPTION:Join SHTA as we place rock stepping stones across Indian Camp Creek to create a sustainable creek crossing. Activities will include finding and moving rock\, placing and stabilizing stepping stones\, and using hand tools to shape the trail that approaches the crossing. No experience necessary! All tools and training will be provided by SHTA. Expect a 1 mile hike from the trailhead to the project. Nearest town: Grand Marais. DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in some of the richest maple forest on the Superior Hiking Trail. Explore prime moose habitat. Learn about fall pond ecology and a river with a fascinating history. Master Naturalists will give short presentations at several stops along the way and answer your questions. \nThis moderate hike is 7 miles round trip with less than 1000 feet of elevation change. \nTrailhead location: Cook County Rd 1 Trailhead (Cramer Rd). Driving Directions: Take Hwy 61 to Schroeder\, milepost 79. Turn northwest (away from the lake) on Cook County Rd 1/Cramer Rd. Drive 3.6 miles to the trailhead on the right. Map \nIf multiple people wish to hike together\, each participant must complete a separate registration. Here’s your chance to clear the trail corridor of woody brush using hand tools and to mark the trail you’ve cleared with fresh blazes. Join experienced volunteer crew leaders Nicole Halgrimson and Denny Caneff to clean up brush and add new blazes on the SHT north and east of Cascade River State Park. No experience necessary!
