SUMMARY:Arrowhead Reroute Celebration -- Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join SHTA and our many partners — the North Country Trail Association\, Border Route Trail Association\, National Park Service\, and City of Duluth — or a formal program and ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the recent passage of the Arrowhead Reroute legislation that makes the SHT part of the North Country National Scenic Trail’s route in Minnesota. \nThe program will feature a combination of politicians who supported the legislation\, trail organization leaders\, business owners\, and agency partners talking about what the Reroute means for northeastern Minnesota. After the formal remarks\, we’ll do a ceremonial ribbon cutting recognizing the designation. \nBecause of limited parking at the Trailhead\, please plan to park at Spirit Mountain Lodge’s main parking lot (map at https://goo.gl/maps/EZNtTWHPQcx) and a shuttle will be provided to the Trailhead starting at 11am. \nRSVP for the free event here\, and consider also joining us on Thursday for a social gathering at Spirit Mountain Grand Avenue Chalet in Duluth from 6-8pm. \nShare the event on Facebook \n \nPlease contact Jaron Cramer at jcramer@superiorhiking.org with any questions about the event.

SUMMARY:Rapid Response Volunteer Event -- Haul Materials To Project Site
DESCRIPTION:The Superior Hiking Trail Association has a narrow weather window to haul supplies in to fix an infamous mud pit between Crosby Manitou State Park and the Caribou River State Wayside. Due to this narrow window of opportunity\, SHTA is seeking 5-10 volunteers for this short-notice project. \nWhat: Help haul materials over snow from a forest road to the Superior Hiking Trail. Materials have been hauled to within roughly 1000 feet from the SHT\, and they need to be carried to the Trail through the woods\, where we hope to have a narrow path cleared. Volunteers will need to be prepared to walk 3 miles round-trip along a forest road to reach the site. \nWhen: Saturday\, March 30th. Volunteers will meet at 9:00 at the Tettegouche State Park Visitor Center. We will aim to be back at the Visitor Center by 4:30. \nBring: Traction devices (cleats\, yak trax\, etc.) may be needed for walking up the road\, snowshoes will be needed for hauling materials to the Trail\, proper clothing (think layers)\, ample food\, including lots of snacks\, and lots of water. There will be no ability to fill up water throughout the day. \nIf you have them\, PLEASE bring a sled made for hauling\, not sledding\, and straps or rope to secure loads. \nContact Jo Swanson at jswanson@superiorhiking.org if you’d like to help with this critical step in the project!

SUMMARY:Ely's Peak Loop Celebration with Mayor Larson (rescheduled)
DESCRIPTION:The Superior Hiking Trail Association\, in partnership with the City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Department\, recently completed work on a new section of the SHT to complete a loop at Ely’s Peak in West Duluth. We are pleased to host a celebration on October 22nd at 3:30pm with Duluth Mayor Emily Larson\, who will install a “You Are Here” map to guide trail users as they explore the new loop. The public is invited to join us at the Beck’s Road trail head (123rd Ave W) for a short walk up to the new loop for the map installation ceremony. \n\nThe new Ely’s Peak Loop is the third of the “Triple Crown of Duluth SHT Loops\,” which includes the Brewer Park and Spirit Mountain SHT Loops. With panoramic vistas and exposed rock faces\, the Ely’s Peak Loop provides an outstanding opportunity for residents and visitors to connect with nature within Duluth city limits. \nThe project was led by SHTA Trail Renewal Consultant Larry Sampson with the support of dozens of SHTA volunteers who contributed nearly 420 hours of field work on the project. Students from the Harbor City International School also contributed nearly 100 hours of volunteer work. \nThe project was funded through the City of Duluth’s St. Louis River Corridor Initiative and matching funds from SHTA. \n\nFor more information about the Ely’s Peak Loop\, visit superiorhiking.org/elys-peak-loop

SUMMARY:Founders' Night
DESCRIPTION:Over 30 years ago\, the concept for the Superior Hiking Trail was born out of a feasibility study put together by Leland Schaar of the U.S. Forest Service. The rugged\, challenging landscape of the Sawtooth Mountains and the presence of Lake Superior offered an opportunity to experience the most spectacular vistas in the Midwest. This foresight\, a dusting of destiny\, and critical investment by a state-sponsored conservation fund were the ingredients a loyal\, committed and talented group of Minnesotans needed to blaze and build what would become the state’s premier natural footpath along Lake Superior’s North Shore. \nWe want to honor and celebrate the folks who launched the SHT and who made significant contributions in its 32-year history with an evening of storytelling and connecting\, with tasty hors d’oeuvres from Duluth Grill and a cash bar to bring the stories to life. You’re invited to join us at SHTA’s Founders’ Night. \nWhat: Founder’s Night\nWhen: Thursday\, October 11th 6 – 9pm. Reception at 6pm\, Program at 7pm.\nWhere: Great Lakes Aquarium\, 353 Harbor Dr\, Duluth\, MN 55802\nTickets: $30 per person\, available online HERE \nSpace is limited so get your tickets today! We hope you’ll join us for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience SHT history with those who made it.
