SUMMARY:Elite Latrine Digging Squad Training
DESCRIPTION:The time has come to offer the world’s second Elite Latrine Digging Squad (ELDS) Training on the Superior Hiking Trail! The training will take place in the Schroeder or Tofte area (exact location TBD) on August 17 at 10:00. Training is expected to end no later than 3:00. \nThis training is open anyone who is interested and willing to help out with the #2 problem on the Superior Hiking Trail. Please only plan to attend if you are interested in digging at least 2 latrines over the course of the next year. Space is limited\, just like the space in our latrines. \nPlease register in advance: Click here to get registered for the training. \nReturning members of ELDS are also invited to attend to learn new techniques and share their knowledge with new ELDS members. \nFrequently Asked Questions: \nWhat is the Elite Latrine Digging Squad?\nELDS is a group of trained volunteers who are dedicated to helping out with the re-digging of SHT latrines. \nDoes the group go out together to dig latrines?\nOnly for the training! Afterwards\, you are on your own. We encourage each ELDS member to bring a friend with when they go out to dig. Always volunteer with a buddy! \nWhat should I bring?\nBring work gloves\, comfortable work clothes\, leather work boots (8″ high preferable)\, water bottles\, sun screen\, bug spray or head net\, and a pack for things you will need for the day. Long sleeves are highly recommended. We will provide tools\, personal protective equipment\, and lots of great scatological humor. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Tamer Ibrahim at tibrahim@superiorhiking.org. Thanks!

SUMMARY:Nature Moment Blonde Ale Release: Benefiting the SHT
DESCRIPTION:\ \nJoin us at the Bent Paddle Brewing Company taproom in Duluth from 5-8pm on Friday\, August 16 to celebrate the SHT and the brewery’s latest release — the Nature Moment Blonde Ale! BPBC will be donating a portion of proceeds from this latest brew in their Valve Jockey Series to support trail renewal efforts on the SHT. \nThis collaboration was spurred on by BPBC Brewer Sam Bartel’s love for the Trail and his desire to make a special ale to give back to it. The event will also feature raffles\, a silent auction & a special check presentation from our good friends\, Trailfitters. \nShare the event with your friends on Facebook.  \nSee you at Bent Paddle!

SUMMARY:Lakewalk Improvement Project - Finish Work
DESCRIPTION:Our crews recently performed some outstanding trail renewal work (see photos here)\, building a heavy-duty boardwalk near the Hovland Lakewalk on the#SuperiorHikingTrail. The new structure will greatly improve the experience of trail users along a perpetually muddy section and keep the Trail from widening into surrounding vegetation. \nWhile our team made great progress\, there’s more work to be done to finish it up. We’ll be back at it Wednesday and Thursday\, August 14-15\, and we need a few more volunteers to help out. \nCamping will be available at the Grand Marais Municipal Campground. Tools\, PPE\, and training will be provided. \nIf you can make it either day\, please contact SHTA Trail Operations Director Tamer Ibrahim at tibrahim@superiorhiking.org to learn more.

SUMMARY:Blue Blaze Blitz
DESCRIPTION:A Blue Blaze Blitz is coming to a trail section near you — join the Superior Hiking Trail Association’s effort to re-blaze the Trail! \n \nMany of the blue and white blazes on the SHT have faded or gone with downed trees since they were originally painted back in 2006 & 2007 (read about the history of the SHT’s blazes here). It’s time to restore these blazes to their original glory and ensure trail users are able to find their way on the SHT. \nPlease click HERE TO REGISTER and let us know: which day you’re available to check-in and pick up supplies from our office in Two Harbors\, which areas of the SHT you’d prefer to blaze\, if you can blaze one or two days\, and how many miles you think you can cover. Once you’ve submitted this completed form\, we’ll follow up with more detailed instructions as we near the event. \nSHTA will provide training\, supplies (brushes\, paint\, templates\, etc.)\, and directions to your assigned trailhead. \nGrab a friend and register to re-blaze the Trail today!  \nCan’t make it in July? We’re doing it again in October.

SUMMARY:Rapid Response Volunteer Event -- Haul Materials To Project Site
DESCRIPTION:The Superior Hiking Trail Association has a narrow weather window to haul supplies in to fix an infamous mud pit between Crosby Manitou State Park and the Caribou River State Wayside. Due to this narrow window of opportunity\, SHTA is seeking 5-10 volunteers for this short-notice project. \nWhat: Help haul materials over snow from a forest road to the Superior Hiking Trail. Materials have been hauled to within roughly 1000 feet from the SHT\, and they need to be carried to the Trail through the woods\, where we hope to have a narrow path cleared. Volunteers will need to be prepared to walk 3 miles round-trip along a forest road to reach the site. \nWhen: Saturday\, March 30th. Volunteers will meet at 9:00 at the Tettegouche State Park Visitor Center. We will aim to be back at the Visitor Center by 4:30. \nBring: Traction devices (cleats\, yak trax\, etc.) may be needed for walking up the road\, snowshoes will be needed for hauling materials to the Trail\, proper clothing (think layers)\, ample food\, including lots of snacks\, and lots of water. There will be no ability to fill up water throughout the day. \nIf you have them\, PLEASE bring a sled made for hauling\, not sledding\, and straps or rope to secure loads. \nContact Jo Swanson at jswanson@superiorhiking.org if you’d like to help with this critical step in the project!
