SUMMARY:Blue Blaze Blitz
DESCRIPTION:A Blue Blaze Blitz is coming to a trail section near you — join the Superior Hiking Trail Association’s effort to re-blaze the Trail! \n \nMany of the blue and white blazes on the SHT have faded or gone with downed trees since they were originally painted back in 2006 & 2007 (read about the history of the SHT’s blazes here). It’s time to restore these blazes to their original glory and ensure trail users are able to find their way on the SHT. \nSHTA will provide training\, supplies (brushes\, paint\, templates\, etc.)\, and directions to your assigned trailhead. \nRegistration is now closed. Please stay tuned for future volunteer events!

SUMMARY:Guided Hike - Night Hike: Brewer Park Loop via Haines Road
DESCRIPTION:Night Hike: Brewer Park Loop via Haines Road\, 3.5 miles \nSaturday\, October 12\, 7pm\n\nOur first-ever guided night hike on the SHT! Don your headlamp for this short jaunt with Steve Coz from Haines Road up to the wide-open viewpoints on the ridgeline above downtown Duluth in Brewer Park. With clear skies\, you’ll be able to catch the full moon too! Head back after taking in the sights or continue on to complete the 3.5 mile loop around the park. Meet at Haines Road Parking Lot. \nNote: This hike requires that every participant stick together in one group. You must bring a headlamp or flashlight to participate. Hikers without a light source will not be allowed on the hike. \nUpdate (October 7): Due to wet conditions\, the route of this hike has been changed to go east to Piedmont Knob and back. You’ll still be treated to good times with fellow hikers\, great (and similar to the original route’s) views\, and a nice hike on the SHT. The meeting place remains Haines Road Parking Lot\, but the distance of the out-and-back hike will be less than 3 miles. \nDirections to Haines Road Parking Lot: On I-35\, take 40th Ave. W. (Haines Rd.) Exit #253B\, go north (uphill) 1.7 miles to SHT parking lot on right.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Volunteer -- Trail Clearing Weekend at Schroeder
DESCRIPTION:March 26\, 2020 Update: SHTA May 2020 Trail Clearing Weekends POSTPONED \nDue to the evolving health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic\, SHTA has decided to indefinitely postpone all trail clearing weekends planned for May 2020. \nWe’ve made this decision out of an abundance of caution to protect our collective health and prevent the spread of the virus. As you may know\, our trail clearing weekends feature communal meals and camping arrangements\, and we do not believe those are safe practices at this point in the pandemic. Alternate lodging arrangements on the North Shore are uncertain for the foreseeable future. Instead\, we will work on a new approach to clearing the Trail this spring\, and we will share opportunities for you to get involved through our Volunteer Portal.  \nWe are grateful to have dedicated volunteers like you in our community\, and we will continue to follow the guidance of public health officials to ensure that all of our activities are safe and enjoyable for all. Thank you for your understanding.  \nYou can find COVID-19 updates from SHTA and helpful resources from partners on our website at superiorhiking.org/covid-19.  \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please contact Tamer Ibrahim at tibrahim@superiorhiking.org.  \n  \nJoin us for a Trail Clearing weekend near Schroeder on Saturday\, May 2 and Sunday\, May 3\, 2020. You can volunteer for one or both days. Volunteers will be put into teams with 1-2 certified chainsawyers and 3-5 “swampers\,” or helpers. Swampers are responsible for removing sawed logs and other debris off the Trail and for carrying gear for their sawyers as requested. It’s hard work\, but really rewarding to know that you are the reason hikers and runners can use the SHT without crawling\, climbing\, or tripping. \nLodging will be available on Friday and Saturday nights at the Schroeder Town Hall. There you can indoor camp (earplugs provided but BYO everything else) or camp in the ballfield behind the building. There is running water at the Town Hall and a refrigerator/freezer with extremely limited space. Showers are available to our volunteers for free at nearby Lamb’s Resort. \nSaturday and Sunday breakfasts will be provided\, along with Saturday supper. Bring lunch makings\, snacks\, and water bottles. Come prepared to be outside all day: plenty of layers\, sturdy footwear\, bug spray\, sunblock\, and did we mention snacks? A dry pair of shoes for evening use/driving home is also recommended. Bring your own gloves\, safety glasses\, and ear protection if you have them — all personal protective equipment\, tools\, and training will be provided as needed. Sawyers should bring their saw and supplies and sawyer-specific personal protective equipment. \nRegistration will open soon.  \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Jody Nonnemacher at jnonnemacher@superiorhiking.org. Thanks! \nPhoto by Roberta Laidlaw.

SUMMARY:Trailbuilding Training -- Unclog Those Pipes!
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 8\, 9\, 10\, and 11 for “Unclog Those Pipes! A Trail Plumbing Training\, or The Importance of Proper Drainage on a Trail\,” with Tim Malzhan\, Trail Operations Director from the Ice Age Trail (doing business as “Trail Eyes”). \nEver walked through a puddle on the SHT and felt the mud begin to drain your soul? Well\, this is your chance for karmic revenge. Puddles\, erosion\, and mud are just a few of the symptoms of an improperly plumbed trail\, and they are all too common on the SHT. The goal of this training will be to learn how to properly and effectively retrofit existing trail with new drainage features\, like knicks and dips\, to facilitate the expeditious movement of water away from the Trail. The SHT is in great need of plumbers! \nCamping will be available at Finland State Forest Campground the nights of July 7-11 with training likely taking place on the Bean and Bear Lakes Loop. \nRegistration will open soon. \nPlease contact Tamer Ibrahim at tibrahim@superiorhiking.org with any questions about this trail building training.

This training will involve significant work in the field\, as we will be rebuilding the steps up to the summit of Britton Peak\, just off the Sawbill Trail in Tofte — ALL IN STONE!  Topics will include setting up and safely using a highline for moving rock; drilling\, splitting and shaping stone; and how to work with native stone to properly construct a beautiful and durable set of stairs. Prior experience preferred\, but not necessary. \nCamping will be available locally for registered trainees. \nRegistration will open soon. \nPlease contact Tamer Ibrahim at tibrahim@superiorhiking.org with any questions about this trail building training.
