SUMMARY:Nature Moment Blonde Ale Release: Benefiting the SHT
DESCRIPTION:\ \nJoin us at the Bent Paddle Brewing Company taproom in Duluth from 5-8pm on Friday\, August 16 to celebrate the SHT and the brewery’s latest release — the Nature Moment Blonde Ale! BPBC will be donating a portion of proceeds from this latest brew in their Valve Jockey Series to support trail renewal efforts on the SHT. \nThis collaboration was spurred on by BPBC Brewer Sam Bartel’s love for the Trail and his desire to make a special ale to give back to it. The event will also feature raffles\, a silent auction & a special check presentation from our good friends\, Trailfitters. \nShare the event with your friends on Facebook.  \nSee you at Bent Paddle!

Please contact jcramer@superiorhiking.org with any questions about the event.   \nJoin SHTA to celebrate National Trails Day and our beloved Superior Hiking Trail at Hike Fest! This year’s family-friendly weekend of hiking the SHT will be at Wolf Ridge ELC from May 31 – June 2. It’s like the best summer camp ever — but in spring. \nWe’re pleased to offer a ton of great hikes (and our first ever trail run)\, opportunities to learn more about the Trail itself\, exciting adventure presentations\, and fun activities for the entire family. \nHere are a few highlights of the event: \n\nNew Zealand: An Adventurer’s Paradise\, presented by Raven Bailey on Friday evening. From tramping tracks to paddling ‘yaks\, Raven will take you on a tour of New Zealand\, sharing her professional guiding experience and personal adventuring quests. Raven will stick around to lead an awesome\, early morning Yoga Course on Saturday to loosen up before you head out for a day of hiking the SHT.  (Learn more about Raven’s guided adventures at: thriveadventures.com)\nA Month in the Wilderness\, presented by North Country Trail Association board member Derrick Passe on Saturday evening. In May 2017\, Derrick led a major\, month-long effort in the BWCA to help restore the Kekekabic\, Disappointment and Snowbank Trails. With the support of 20 volunteers from ages 18 to 70\, Derrick helped reopen 30 miles of Trail and restore 8 hiking campsites after a severe windstorm that knocked down up to 80% of the trees along the trail. Enjoy Derrick’s story of this awesome wilderness experience on a nearby trail while we celebrate National Trails Day. (Learn more about volunteering with NCTA and the Kekekabic Trail Chapter at: northcountrytrail.org/kekekabic-trail-chapter/)\nA Behind-The Scenes Tour with Wolf Ridge ELC executive director Peter Smerud. Learn about the incredible work being done at Wolf Ridge ELC on the new Margaret A. Cargill Lodge\, a Living Building Challenge project\, a year after it was remodeled. A marvel of design\, construction\, and operation\, this lodge has helped move the needle for the entire Midwest\, pushing Wolf Ridge and it’s local partners and suppliers to the leading edge of sustainability.\nMake your trail photos #instagramworthy with tips from local photographer Sam Brueggeman. Sam will lead an afternoon workshop\, then take you around the Wolf Ridge campus to put your newly-honed skills to work. Late Saturday evening\, Sam will also show what goes into mastering the art of night-time star photos at a telescope gathering.\nTwo unique opportunities to learn about the Trail with SHTA’s staff. SHTA executive director Denny Caneff will lead an “insider’s tour” of the Bean and Bear Lakes loop trail\, titled “Bean and Bear With Me — A Tale of Trail Renewal.” SHTA trail development director Jo Swanson will present “Skeeters\, Snow\, and Sleep: 94 Nights on the Superior Hiking Trail\,” about her recently completed quest to camp at all 94 SHTA campsites. You don’t want to miss these two chances to deepen your knowledge and connection with the SHT.\nTrail Run with Trailfitters. Join Trailfitters’ Pat Davison\, who is training for his second Superior 100 race\, for the first-ever SHTA guided trail run from County Road 6\, past the epic Sawmill Dome\, and back to Wolf Ridge ELC.\nA chance to win cool prizes from local businesses with a new SHT-approved activity — Trowel Toss — using “The Deuce\,” the lightest backpacking trowel on the market. SUMMARY:Ely's Peak Loop Celebration with Mayor Larson (rescheduled)
DESCRIPTION:The Superior Hiking Trail Association\, in partnership with the City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Department\, recently completed work on a new section of the SHT to complete a loop at Ely’s Peak in West Duluth. We are pleased to host a celebration on October 22nd at 3:30pm with Duluth Mayor Emily Larson\, who will install a “You Are Here” map to guide trail users as they explore the new loop. The public is invited to join us at the Beck’s Road trail head (123rd Ave W) for a short walk up to the new loop for the map installation ceremony. \n\nThe new Ely’s Peak Loop is the third of the “Triple Crown of Duluth SHT Loops\,” which includes the Brewer Park and Spirit Mountain SHT Loops. With panoramic vistas and exposed rock faces\, the Ely’s Peak Loop provides an outstanding opportunity for residents and visitors to connect with nature within Duluth city limits. \nThe project was led by SHTA Trail Renewal Consultant Larry Sampson with the support of dozens of SHTA volunteers who contributed nearly 420 hours of field work on the project. Students from the Harbor City International School also contributed nearly 100 hours of volunteer work. \nThe project was funded through the City of Duluth’s St. Louis River Corridor Initiative and matching funds from SHTA. \n\nFor more information about the Ely’s Peak Loop\, visit superiorhiking.org/elys-peak-loop
